Language tandems: an innovative approach to language learning at Berlin-Chemie Menarini

In today’s globalized world, fluency in foreign languages is an invaluable skill, especially in multinational companies. Recognizing this need, Berlin-Chemie Menarini has introduced an innovative initiative for its staff in Germany: language tandems—a practical, engaging, and dynamic way for colleagues to improve their language skills together.

A language tandem is based on a simple principle: two native speakers of different languages regularly meet to converse in each other’s language, helping one another learn. This informal, pressure-free approach enhances fluency, expands vocabulary, and builds confidence in communication—all in a relaxed and supportive environment, without the rigidity of traditional classroom lessons.

In Germany, language tandems are a well-established practice. In cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich, countless events, apps, and online platforms cater to those looking to improve their language skills through this method. Many German universities offer tandem programs for international students, while numerous companies have incorporated them into their employee training programs.

By adopting this initiative, the HR Team of Berlin-Chemie Menarini has embraced a practice deeply rooted in German corporate culture, reaffirming its commitment to employee development and professional growth.

The Berlin-Chemie Menarini initiative

As part of its professional development strategy, Berlin-Chemie Menarini introduced language tandems in 2024, launching 23 tandem groups covering 10 languages, including English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Russian, Croatian, Polish, Arabic, and Korean.

Each tandem consists of colleagues who meet regularly—both in person and virtually—to practice and support each other in their learning journey. Employees can tailor their experience by selecting the difficulty level and discussion topics, making the learning process highly personalized and engaging. This approach not only improves language skills but also fosters stronger connections between colleagues across different locations, cultivating a more collaborative and internationally minded workplace.

Beyond professional development, the program also strengthens workplace relationships and builds a sense of community. Informal conversations and cultural exchanges help participants connect on a deeper level, creating a more inclusive and dynamic work environment. In a multinational company like Berlin-Chemie Menarini, fostering these cross-cultural connections is a major advantage.

Language tandems offer a unique opportunity to learn languages in an interactive and engaging way. Berlin-Chemie Menarini’s initiative is a testament to how companies can invest in language training in an innovative and effective manner. In an increasingly global workplace, strong communication is the key to success—so why not make learning fun along the way?
