Menarini’s presence in Spain is a story that spans over a century, beginning in 1924 with the founding of the Puig Sala laboratory in Ripoll, nestled in the Pyrenees about 100 km north of Barcelona.

In the 1950s, Menarini took its first steps into the Spanish market, and by 1957, it had begun producing its pharmaceuticals under license. 

However, the company’s true turning point came in 1965, when Cavaliere Alberto Sergio Aleotti, newly appointed as General Director, launched the Group’s international expansion—starting in Barcelona. In 1972, the company moved its operations to Badalona, which became the headquarters of Laboratorios Menarini, allowing the company to strengthen its presence in Spain and expand across Europe.

Today, Menarini España looks back with pride at its achievements. With over 600 employees, the company closed 2023 with a revenue of €262.7 million—around 6% of the Group’s total. As General Director Ignacio González highlights, this success is the result of a strategic international expansion, significant investments in innovation, and efficient production management.

Menarini’s Study Drug Safety Unit in Badalona plays a vital role in pharmacovigilance, supporting the Group’s research and development projects. In 2023 alone, Menarini España invested €5 million in R&D. Additionally, its production facility is a standout in the industry: every year, over 60 million packages are manufactured using sustainable practices, incorporating recycled materials and low-impact environmental processes.

Over the years, Menarini España has grown into a key player in the Spanish pharmaceutical market, building strong partnerships with healthcare professionals and collaborating with local institutions.

The company’s commitment to the community extends beyond healthcare. Menarini España actively supports initiatives that improve people’s lives, such as food drives for the Barcelona Food Bank and sponsorship of the Menarini Joventut wheelchair basketball team.
