Inclusion, play, and independence: Menarini renews its commitment to PITA

PITA, short for “Progetto d’Intervento Terapeutico in Acqua” (Therapeutic Water-Based Intervention Project), is a pioneering initiative that uses water as a medium to support growth and development in children with special needs.

Launched in 2001 by the founding members of the Florence-based association Astrolabio, the program takes place at the “Paolo Costoli” municipal swimming pool and welcomes children as young as two. Over the years, PITA has grown steadily, reaching over 200 young participants in its most recent edition.

The project focuses in particular on children with autism spectrum disorders and multiple disabilities, offering individualized programs in a safe and stimulating environment. Here, the water becomes more than just a setting: it becomes a tool for developing social, emotional, and cognitive skills.

The Menarini Group has proudly supported PITA since 2011, recognizing its value as a vehicle for social inclusion and personal growth.

“Movement in water, combined with play, encourages socialization and helps children build key developmental skills,” say Lucia and Alberto Giovanni Aleotti, shareholders and board members at Menarini. “We are deeply pleased to know that the children cared for by Astrolabio can grow and play in a safe space, and that their families can count on the expertise of a highly qualified team.”

What sets PITA apart is its play-centered, multidisciplinary approach. A dedicated team of neuropsychomotor therapists, psychomotor specialists, educators, psychologists, swimming coaches, and lifeguards work together to monitor and guide each child’s progress step by step.

The sessions, conducted one-on-one and lasting around 40 minutes, primarily run from October to May, in sync with the school calendar, and extend into the summer with a more sports-oriented offering.

The impact has been significant: water-based activities have shown to greatly improve cognitive, emotional-relational, and motor skills in the children involved.

PITA

Angela Manzani, President of Astrolabio, expressed her gratitude: “We want to thank Menarini and the Aleotti family for the trust they’ve placed in our unique and special project for more than a decade.”

Over the years, the partnership between Menarini and the PITA team has collected countless stories of meaningful, everyday victories. These small but powerful successes reflect the strength and determination of the children and their families, supported every step of the way by skilled professionals committed to a journey of growth, resilience, and trust.
