For over two decades, the Therapeutic Water-Based Intervention Project—known as PITA from its Italian acronym—has been transforming lives through an innovative approach that harnesses the therapeutic power of water to nurture children with special needs.

This groundbreaking program began in 2001 when members of Florence’s Astrolabio association recognized water’s unique potential as a developmental tool. Based at the Paolo Costoli municipal swimming pool, the initiative welcomes children from age two onwards and has expanded remarkably over the years, now serving more than 200 young participants annually.

PITA specializes in supporting children on the autism spectrum and those with multiple disabilities, crafting personalized programs within an environment that’s both secure and engaging. In this setting, water transcends its physical properties—it becomes a gateway to enhanced social connection, emotional growth, and cognitive development.

What sets PITA apart is its play-centered, multidisciplinary approach. A dedicated team of neuropsychomotor therapists, psychomotor specialists, educators, psychologists, swimming coaches, and lifeguards work together to monitor and guide each child’s progress step by step.

The program operates primarily during the academic year, from October through May, with personalized 40-minute sessions. Summer months bring a shift toward more athletic activities, maintaining engagement year-round.

The impact has been significant: water-based activities have shown to greatly improve cognitive, emotional-relational, and motor skills in the children involved.
