When sport becomes an inspiration: celebrating emotions at the 29th Fair Play Menarini International Award

Against the stunning backdrop of Fiesole’s ancient Roman Theatre, the 29th Fair Play Menarini International Award unfolded – a celebration that transcends athletic achievement to champion the very essence of sporting excellence: respect, moral courage, and uncompromising integrity. The gala brought together sporting legends from across Italy and the globe, each embodying an unwavering commitment to the principles that elevate sport from competition to inspiration.
Leading the roster of honorees was Luis Figo, the world football champion celebrated not only for his stellar career but for his grace and dignity both on the pitch and in life. Alongside him were Italian football icons Demetrio Albertini and Alessandro “Billy” Costacurta, who earned accolades for their unwavering dedication, infectious enthusiasm, and embodiment of true sporting values.
Taking center stage were Gianmarco Tamberi, the high jumper who claimed Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 and proudly carried Italy’s flag at Paris 2024, and Arianna Errigo, the fencing virtuoso who jointly held the honor of flag bearer with him during the previous year’s ceremonies.
Recognition also went to Blanka Vlašić, the Croatian high jump legend and former world champion; Nadia Battocletti, the rising star of middle-distance running who has already secured impressive triumphs across European, world, and Olympic competitions; Alice Bellandi, freshly crowned as judo world champion; and Andy Díaz, who has excelled in the triple jump with both indoor world medals and Olympic bronze.

The event was further enriched by three distinguished Fair Play Menarini Ambassadors: Ian Thorpe, the Australian swimming phenomenon with five Olympic gold medals; Giancarlo Antognoni, Italy’s 1982 World Cup hero; and Fabrizio Donato, who claimed Olympic glory at London 2012. These exceptional athletes perfectly exemplify the true essence of fair play.
The gala, hosted by Rachele Sangiuliano, Federica Lodi, Michele Cagiano, and Omar Schillaci and broadcast live on Sky TG24, featured compelling storytelling from renowned journalists Federico Buffa and Giorgio Porrà, who brought the athletes’ remarkable journeys to life with passion and depth.
The ceremony also spotlighted emerging talents Nicola Nardo, Michele Vivalda, and Alessandro Bugli, who received the Fair Play Menarini “Young Athletes” Prize. The prestigious Fiamme Gialle “Study and Sport” Special Prize was presented to Margherita Voliani, who exemplifies the perfect harmony between academic excellence and athletic achievement. Previously unveiled during June press conferences at CONI and the Tuscany Region headquarters, these honors reflect the initiative’s dedication to fostering and inspiring future generations.
